In 30 seconds
 - Agents work best as hires with one job each, not one assistant for everything.

 - They need a shared memory: one folder about your customers, decisions and numbers.

 - Let them draft, never send. Every message, post and release waits for you.

 - My numbers, 25 June to 16 October 2026: 1,033 active hours, 3,313 agent runs, 791 releases.

 **1,033 h**active hours in 114 days
 **3,313**agent runs
**59%**of my code edits made by agents
**$20–320**a month of AI, against ~$15k of roles

## Give each agent one job

**One assistant for everything forgets what it was doing.** A hire with one job doesn’t. I run nine: a chief of staff, support, customer emails, sales, content, launch, numbers and money, grants and credits, and ops.

Each one has a template, a worked example and the rules I learned the hard way.

## Give them one shared memory

A knowledge/ folder: customers, decisions, rules, numbers and a daily log. Every agent reads it before a task and writes one line after.

That is what turns nine agents into a team. Sales logs a reply, and the next morning support already knows.

## Let them draft. You decide.

My agents wrote 109 emails in this period. I sent every one of them myself.

**The rule I enforce:** agents read, draft and propose. Sending, publishing, paying, deploying and deleting are blocked or ask me first.

## Where the hours actually went

| Area | Share of my hours |
|---|---|
| Engineering | 64% |
| Marketing | 20% |
| Ops and compliance | 11% |
| Video | 4% |

About 8 agent actions for every message I typed. My median prompt was 11 words.

## What it costs

| Setup | What you pay for | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| The same roles as freelancers | Part-time rates, nine roles (estimate) | ~$15,000 |
| On a budget | A $20 AI plan + free tiers of Notion, PostHog and Linear | $20 |
| Hands-off (my setup) | A $200 AI plan + an SEO tool ($99) + a leads tool ($19) | ~$320 |

## The uncomfortable part

I shipped 791 releases in 16 weeks, 161 of them in one week. **48% of them had no browser check after.** Only 6% of my sessions started with a plan.

Speed without checks is how agents break things. So I built guardrails: agents plan first, review each other, check in a real browser, and nothing ships until I say so.

## What agents can’t do for you

They can’t decide what your company is for, who it serves, or what you’ll say no to. They don’t replace talking to customers. They give you back the hours to do it.

## Copy my setup

I packaged this system as [**Bootstrapped OS**](https://bootstrappedmakers.com/bootstrapped-os): the nine hires, the shared knowledge base, the gates, and the 79 lessons. It sets up in 30 minutes, and founding members of Bootstrapped Makers get it set up with them live.

## Questions

Can one person run a company with AI agents?
Yes, if each agent has one job, they share one knowledge base about the business, and the founder approves everything that goes out. I ran mine this way for 114 days: 1,033 active hours and 3,313 agent runs.

How much does it cost to run a company with AI agents?
About $20 a month for an AI plan with free tools, up to about $320 a month for a hands-off setup, against roughly $15,000 a month for the same nine roles at part-time freelance rates.

Should AI agents send emails or post on their own?
No. Let them draft and propose; you send. My agents drafted 109 emails in this period and I sent every one myself.

 What is Bootstrapped OS?
A system of nine AI hires for a one-person business that share one knowledge base and draft support, sales, content, numbers, launch, grants and ops work. The founder approves everything.
